At 32 weeks pregnant, the arrival of your baby is getting very near now. This is what you have been waiting for and it is important to keep this in mind as these last few weeks can be very tiresome.

The size of your belly puts pressure on your veins; this can lead to varicose veins. Gentle exercise, rest, and support hose can bring relief, after the birth.

You may feel short of breath or have trouble breathing and heartburn. This is because, in the 32nd week of pregnancy, the top of your uterus is very high, about five inches above your belly button, and the growing uterus is putting a lot of pressure on your diaphragm.

You are probably putting on about a pound of weight every week by this time. By this week, your blood volume has increased by 10%. This lets your body accommodate you and the baby and also makes up for any blood that you lose during the birth.

The baby will have stopped growing in length at about 16/17 inches but, may still continue to put on a bit of weight. At pregnancy week 32, she will probably weigh about four pounds. The finger nails will be growing and may even need trimming when it is born, especially if you are overdue.

Fine tuning is taking place in your baby’s nervous system as brain cells are gradually coded into distinct areas that will control specific functions.

The baby’s skin will be a lot less transparent by now as it continues to develop fat and in fact, will be smooth and soft to touch. The baby will be moving and sleeping in regular patterns and scientists have even discovered that the baby is able to dream at this stage! Her movements will all be aligned to getting it ready for the world it is about to enter, things such as breathing, swallowing and sucking.

It is probable that the baby is already in the engaged position but if not it is nothing to worry about. If, however, she doesn’t move into the engaged position, she might mean a breech birth but this is only for about 5% of births and your midwife will advise you about this.

Baby Weight and Size

At 32 weeks pregnant, your baby measures around 17-1/8 inches (43.7 cm) long from crown to heel! His/her weight is now around 1.9 kg (4 lbs 3-1/2 oz), just about the size of a durian.

It is probably hard for you to get enough sleep at the moment but you should also take your partner into consideration. It is probable that they still have to get up for work and you might like to consider separate beds for a while. Discuss this with your partner and work out what is best for both of you.

A lot of pregnant women worry about the birth, especially if this is the first baby. One of their main concerns is whether they will be able to give vaginal birth. Well there are different positions for labor and you can try these out. These positions allow the cervix to dilate or open up during the labor contractions and encourage your baby to move into right position. Try these positions along with your breathing exercises and massage and this will increase your chances of a vaginal birth.

Maternity leave

If you are working, you may already have started your maternity leave or you may be leaving it until the last possible moment. You can start thinking about how you will fill the spare time that you will have. Yes, you will be busy with the baby but will still probably have a lot of extra time on your hands that you never had while you were at work. The novelty of sitting watching daytime TV will soon wear off!

Exercise during 32nd week of pregnancy

Plan a gentle exercise regime for now and after the birth. Arrange to meet up with some friends to go for a walk or go swimming and then have a coffee or lunch afterwards. It is very important to keep a regular exercise routine.

Spend time on all fours, sitting on an exercise ball, or leaning over a bean bag or ball to move your baby into the best position.

Talk to your doctor and partner about any anxieties you may have about the approaching labor.

Future perspective

You should check that your finances are in order. It is never too early to safeguard your baby’s future. Things can go wrong no matter how well you think you have planned for the future. It’s not nice to think about but it has to be done. Check around for different options for insurance in case of accident, illness or even death. You should also make a will if you haven’t already done so.

Eat healthy food

You need to be eating well and healthily now. At 32 weeks pregnant, it may feel as if your stomach is squashed because the baby is taking up so much space. Bear in mind, though, that half of any weight you are gaining is going to the baby!

If you are worried about going overdue, some women think that eating spicy foods, especially curries can induce labor. It’s not something to worry about just yet but worth bearing in mind when the time comes.

It’s the 32nd week of pregnancy now and you should be almost prepared. But still, do some final checks so that you know everything is in place and that you are ready!
